RADHA SOAMI SATSANG
“ Radha Soami ” means “ Lord of the SOUL ”, and is an appellation given to the Supreme Being by the great SAINT or Master, Seth Shiv Dayal Singh, ( 1818-78 ) who was affectionately known as “ Soamiji ” to his many disciples.
“ Soamiji ” gave out in a simplified form, well suited to the present age, the age-old spiritual teachings of the East of the highest order. The Radha Soami Teachings are also widely known as “ Sant Mat ”, or the Teachings of the SAINTS. They are also called “ Surat Shabd Yoga ”, meaning the Yoga that unites the individual SOUL with the dynamic power of the Supreme Being.
Seth Shiv Dayal Singh .. who gave out his teachings at Agra, directed one of his best disciples, Baba Jaimal Singh (1839-1903) to settle on the banks of the Beas River and give spiritual discourses there.
Baba Jaimal Singh selected the site of the present Radha Soami Colony and settled there in a small hut in the year 1891. His presence brought the spiritual seekers together and before his passing away in the year 1902, he had given initiation to several thousand SOULS.
Before his passing away, he, in turn, as is often the custom in India, appointed one of his most advanced disciples to be his successor. This was Huzur Baba Sawan Singhji Maharaj ( 1858-1948 ) who, for many years, has been referred throughout India as the “ Satguru ” … “ Great Master ”.
Under his aegis, the Radha Soami Colony increased very greatly in size. During his forty five years of service as the Satguru, he gave initiation to more than a hundred thousand seekers who were athirst for spiritual truths and guidance.
This Great Master departed from the earth-plane in the year 1948, after appointing.
Maharaj Sardar Bahadur Jagat Singhji (1884-1951) as his successor. This Master carried on the noble traditions of those who had preceded him, but left this Earth in the year 1951, after only three and half years of serving as Satguru, at Beas. He was a Master of great spiritual powers, and devoted himself whole-heartedly to carrying out the duties assigned to him by the Great Master.
Maharaj Jagat Singhji appointed Maharaj Charan Singhji (1916 – 1990) as his successor, who was the eldest grandson of the Great Master. He was the fourth of the line of Satgurus established at Beas, and his frequent discourses carry on the tradition of instructing true seekers on spiritual matters and the path to God realization, as well as initiating them into the Path of the SOUL, which has now existed at Beas for full three-quarters of a century.
Under his supervision and spiritual guidance, the Radha Soami Colony has become one of the most important centers in India for spiritual instruction of the highest order.
Baba Gurinder Singhji is the sixth Sant Satguru of “ RADHA SOAMI SATSANG BEAS ”. He succeeded from Maharaj Charan Singhji in the year 1990. He is one of the youngest teachers to be appointed to head the “ RADHA SOAMI SATSANG BEAS ” headquarters.
“ RADHA SOAMI SATSANG BEAS ” teaches a personal path of spiritual development which includes a vegetarian diet, abstinence from intoxicants, a moral way of life and the practice of daily meditation.
There are no rituals, ceremonies, hierarchies or mandatory contributions, nor are there compulsory gatherings. Members need not give up their cultural identity or religious preference to follow this path.
At the core of the “ RADHA SOAMI SATSANG BEAS ” philosophy is a belief that there is a spiritual purpose to human life .. to experience the divinity of God, who resides in all of us. It is through this experience that we will realize the truth of the concept that there is only one God and we are all expressions of his love.
Central to the “ RADHA SOAMI SATSANG BEAS ” philosophy is a spiritual teacher who explains the purpose of life and guides and instructs members in a method of spirituality based on a daily meditation practice. The present teacher is Baba Gurinder Singhji, who lives with his family at the main centre.
By performing the meditation practice according to the teacher’s instructions, individuals can realize the presence of God within themselves. It is a solitary practice that is done in the quiet of one’s own home. Members commit themselves to a way of life that supports spiritual growth while carrying out their responsibilities to family, friends and society.
