Shri Vethathri Maharishi was born in the year 1911 .. in the village of “ Guduvancheri ” .. 30 km south of Chennai, India, into an indigent weaver’s family.
From his youth, he was driven by the desire for knowledge and in particular strove to find answers to three questions:
” What is God? ”
” What is life ? ”
” Why is poverty there in the world? ”
The SEARCH to find these answers as well as to further his lot in life, led him into various fields of endeavour, including becoming a qualified practitioner of two systems of Indian indigenous medicine .. Ayurveda and Siddha, and certified practitioner Homoeopathy as well.
He was declared the 19th Siddha by the Dravidian University.
After spending several years in various minor employments, he established a textile concern that grew to employ over 2000 workers on a profit sharing basis that would be thought progressive even today.
Although constantly busy with family and business matters, he always found time to pursue his deep desire to achieve self-realization and realization of Truth.
Several years of intense meditation and introspection brought him full enlightenment at the age of thirty five.
At the age of fifty .. he closed his commercial ventures and devoted himself solely to spiritual service, so as to guide sincere spiritual aspirants by transmitting and sharing with them his experiences and revelations of Truth.
Even though his life has long been dedicated to spiritual and social service, he remained a ” householder “, i.e. he has not broken his family ties and taken vows of renunciation, but rather lived in the indigenous Siddha tradition, maintaining family ties and fulfilling his family level duties.
From his enlightenment, Shri Vethathiri Maharishi received knowledge of the origin and functions of the cosmos and all aspects of life, as Nature revealed to his inner vision.
During these years, he wrote over 2000 poems on philosophical subjects. He remained dedicated to serving his fellow beings by conveying his understanding of universe and the One Supreme Power through his speeches and writings.

In the Indian Philosophical tradition, his philosophy corresponds to pure ADVAITA ; it may be called pantheistic monism. His language and attitudes are contemporary, non-sectarian and non-dogmatic. He authored about seventy books in Tamil and English.
Shri Vethathiri Maharishi gives us a comprehensive and integrated revelation of the existence and functions of the One Reality; his exposition from the origin of the cosmos to the observed natural phenomena comprises the Vethathiriyan Model of the Universe.
With this comprehensive view, SCIENCE and RELIGION are reconciled and unified, to their mutual enhancement and completion. By integrating science and religion, global harmony and peace will follow, based on universal understanding of One Truth, and reverence and respect for all its manifestations.

” SKY System “

The human being is a combination of the physical body, mind and life-force. To acquire and maintain inner peace and harmony, self knowledge and systematic physical and psychic practices are essential. The complete system, referred to as ” SKY “, evolved by Maharishi consists of the following:
Simplified Physical Exercise : To maintain health and prevent disease
KayaKalpa Yoga: An ancient Siddha practice for enhancement of life energy
Simplified Kundalini Yoga : A system of meditation clarity and strength of mind
Introspection: A practical methodology for sublimating the negative emotions of greed, anger, vengeance, worries, etc.
Understanding of the Laws of Nature as well as one’s relationship with Nature and with society is rationally and practically elucidated, providing a holistic education which is essential for every human being.
Maharishi strove for World Peace for over four decades. In his book entitled ” World Peace ” published in the year 1957 ; he reviewed the condition of humanity, identified the problems affecting mankind and delineated a comprehensive plan for bringing about total transformation in society so as to achieve peace, prosperity and harmony.
His is a global perspective covering the fields of politics, economics, education, science, medicine, psychology and philosophy.
In the year 1958, Shri Vethathiri Maharishi founded the ” World Community Service Centre (WCSC) “, a non-profit registered society with a view to work towards World Peace through individual peace. As of today, more than 200 trusts and about 1000 meditation centers have been registered and affiliated to wcsc in India, and thousands of people have benefited physically, mentally, socially and spiritually from the teachings and practices.
From the years 1972 to 1993, he travelled abroad annually, lecturing and teaching extensively in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and U.S.A.
In the year 1984, he founded the ” Vethathiri Maharishi Kundalini Yoga and KayaKalpa Research Foundation ” .. based in Aliyar, Pollachi, Tamil Nadu. Facilities are provided for large groups to stay and undergo SKY courses of several days duration in a peaceful and beautiful natural environment.

The Temple of Consciousness is the center piece of the campus. Unlike other temples, this one is consecrated to realization of consciousness solely through meditation and contemplation ; no deities are installed nor are rituals of any kind performed. Consciousness is recognized as the universal, integrated order of function : the omniscient, omnipresent quality of the entire cosmos .. time, space and quality invariant.
Shri Vethathiri Maharishi shed his mortal coil at the age of 95 on 28th March, 2006.

“ Regular Meditation is a Must ”

As one focuses the mind on the life-force, simultaneously the mind withdraws from all other sensory activities.
The mental frequency is gradually reduced and comes to ” alpha ” wave length, which is 8 to13 cycles per second. When one is engaged in sensory or physical activities the mental frequency is in ” beta” wave, which is 14 to 40 c.p.s.
This is the state of acceleration and aggravation of the mind, when more bio-magnetism is converted and consumed by physical transformation into pressure, sound, light, smell, taste and thought. When one begins meditation on the life-force, mental frequency is reduced to alpha state.
By focusing the mind on one point, will-power gradually increases. Sharpness in intelligence and peace of mind come into being with continued practice.
By doing the meditation practice daily, morning and evening, for about twenty minutes each sitting, the intensity of energy will be felt as heaviness or pressure.
During the period of practicing meditation, it is usual to get heaviness in the head when the energy is sufficiently intensified in the upper part of the body.
There is a significant change in the personality after practicing meditation and introspection. Instead of one’s mind being a victim and slave of the senses, the position is reversed. Therefore, this system of meditation of the life-force is called Raja Yoga “( King of Yogas ), meaning that the mind assumes the throne to control the senses, rather than being slave of the senses.

“ Spiritual Knowledge is Must ”

Following is Shri Vethathiri Maharishi’s Speech at the United Nations Organization, New York, U.S.A.On 9th January 1975.
” Dear Friends ! I am so glad to see all of you gathered here with a noble aim of hearing something about spiritual development. Spiritual knowledge is very important to make our life perfect and to maintain peace in the life of one and all on the Globe. This great Organization U.N.O. has been started and is functioning only with the aim of establishing peace among mankind. In both political and economic fields, the U.N.O. strives hard to bring peace.
” It is a noble scheme to bring the representatives of all nations under one roof and make them think about international peace which is the only hope of survival of mankind against the dangerous atomic weapons. The world of philosophical wisdom and intellectuals of international thought will appreciate the useful services of U.N.O.
” Here, I have to point out- one more thing which is very much relevant for peace. That is the development of SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE among mankind.
” Of course, material comforts are essential for peaceful life but without spiritual knowledge, material comforts alone will not bring satisfaction or peace in life.
” The development of spiritual knowledge alone will enable mankind to share all the needs with love, respect and responsibility. The love which blossoms in a man as a natural process by spiritual development will enable him to understand the feelings of others, to respect the needs and ambitions of others and to cooperate in the effort of satisfactory living by willing sacrifice on one’s own physical, financial and intellectual abilities.
” Therefore, in addition to the efforts for increasing the material comforts by political and economic means, an opportunity for spiritual development in the human society should be provided so that all deserving persons will develop spiritual knowledge in time. ”
” What is spiritual development?
” In the process of living, the MIND is the nucleus and important phenomenon. When one understands the values and wonders of the mind , he can enjoy life successfully and happily.
” As the MIND is only the psychic extension of the LIFE-FORCE, it is imperative first to know about the LIFE-FORCE which is the base of the MIND. The LIFE-FORCE and the MIND both are secret phenomena in the personality of man. These cannot be understood by any of our conventional five senses.
” It is only by a systematic psychic practice, with the MIND tracing its own base, the existence and functions of both the LIFE-FORCE and the MIND and their relationship with one another can be understood. Such a psychic practice is called meditation’ or ‘ Kundalini Yoga ‘.
” Kundalini is the name of the fundamental supreme universal energy, the divine spirit. The LIFE-FORCE in any living being is a part and parcel of the universal force , which governs the universal functions. In fact, it is the association of such force (energy-particles) in various intensities that conditions all the manifestations.
” Therefore, it is to be understood that the spirit is the basic principle of all the physical manifestations as well as the psychic function, the mind. Realization of the spirit, its existence, functions and results is ‘spiritual knowledge’ or, wisdom ‘. This is the SCIENCE of all Sciences. Living with MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE alone is one sided load to the mind. For balanced life, spiritual knowledge also is a must.
” Dear Friends ! Man is a peculiar living being who is always struggling between habit and wisdom. After he is developed in thinking abilities, only through a systematic spiritual practice he can achieve the goal of perfection.
” The aim of the ‘ World Community Service Centre’ is to spread the SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE to the people of all nations.
” After a long period of research over forty years of my life, I found out that only spiritual knowledge will result in peace, within self, in the society and among nations. I formulated a safe and perfect method for spiritual development and am teaching it to deserving persons. I am ready to impart my knowledge to any friends who is willing to undergo the wonderful psychic practice ‘ SKY ‘. “
